Overview
Oxygen is the one common industrial gas where an ordinary compressor design becomes a genuine fire hazard. High-pressure oxygen combined with hydrocarbon contamination — oil film, grease, a dirty thread, a rubber O-ring — can ignite. Once an oxygen system ignites, it burns in the metal itself, and it cannot be extinguished by removing the fuel.
That is why oxygen compressors are built to a different standard. TUKE ENERGY supplies oil-free reciprocating oxygen compressors in which the cylinder runs without lubricating oil, all wetted components are cleaned to an oxygen-service procedure before assembly, materials are selected for oxygen compatibility, and elastomers and sealants are restricted to approved types. Component selection also accounts for the fact that oxygen service requires avoiding abrupt pressure changes and high gas velocities.
The machine is dimensioned on the real duty: oxygen purity, standard flow in Nm3/h, suction and discharge pressure stated as bar(g), inlet temperature, cooling conditions and the operating pattern. Multi-stage configuration with intercooling is normal at higher pressures, with inter-stage cooling and separation designed so that no liquid reaches the next stage.
Applications include oxygen compression for industrial gas supply, metallurgical processes, chemical and petrochemical oxidation processes, and oxygen feed to gasification and other process plants. Packages are supplied complete with filtration, cooling, instrumentation, safety valves and PLC control, and are documented with the cleaning and material records that oxygen service requires.
Typical applications
- Oxygen boosting in air separation, steel and non-ferrous metallurgy
- Oxygen process duty in chemical and glass manufacturing
- Oxygen supply where dedicated cleaning and material selection is mandatory
Key features
Oil-free, non-lubricated cylinder construction
Oxygen-service cleaning of wetted components before assembly, with records
Materials and elastomers selected and restricted for oxygen compatibility
Design avoiding abrupt pressure change and excessive gas velocity
Multi-stage with intercooling and inter-stage separation for higher discharge pressures
Temperature monitoring and high-temperature trip protection
Full instrumentation, safety valves and PLC-based control
Cleaning, material and test documentation issued with the machine
Technical specifications
- Media: oxygen (O2), purity per project specification
- Construction: oil-free reciprocating, oxygen-service cleaned
- Discharge pressure and capacity: project specific
- Safety: restricted materials and elastomers, temperature trip protection, documented cleanliness
Selection and design notes
Oxygen service demands dedicated cleaning, material and sealing design because the gas supports combustion and reacts with hydrocarbon contamination. An oxygen design is never copied from a natural gas solution.
Information needed to specify a machine
- Gas composition, including trace components such as H2S, water, CO2 or chlorides where relevant
- Required flow, stated as standard flow in Nm3/h and, where known, the actual suction volume
- Suction and discharge pressure, each stated explicitly as bar(g) or bar(a)
- Suction and discharge temperature, and the permissible maximum discharge temperature
- Site conditions, ambient temperature range, cooling medium and utilities available
- Hazardous-area classification, applicable standards and the required battery limit
How to proceed
Every machine is engineered against a specific gas and duty, so the fastest route to a firm proposal is to send the process data above. Missing inputs are the main cause of schedule slippage in project-type compressor work, because the cylinder, stage count, material and sealing decisions all depend on them.
